Cambridge Manuscript ADD 1680 (Nk)

Section ix of a bundle of various texts. Palm leaf; Bhujimol or one of the other Nepalese hooked scripts. Bendall dates ca. 13th. Leaf missing with beginning of the text. Damage at the ends. Some worm damage. Conze could evidently read more of this text than is clear now, especially the beginnings of the lines on both sides, else he merely speculated as to lost readings. The spelling is more regular than some of the modern mss.

Notes

[1] expect k, but no virāma visible.

[2] The syllables are not clear but tyatrāvi seems most likely, and it probably represents tyatra api where tyatra is a form of tatra ‘there’.

[3] expect here, but it is omitted

[4] So Conze.

[5] The r ligature is clearly visible, dhā is expected.

[6] Conze offers no reading here. The first syllable must be tu.

[7] Conze reads or perhaps speculates: na a mā rgaḥ which would fit.

[8] So also Conze.

[9] The syllable is clearly bha, but we expect ta here – the two are similar.

[10] Expect ra tya but the syllables have been erased.

[11] Syllables are partially obscured, but the visible portions appear to conform to the expected reading.

[12] The syllables here are clear, but unexpected. we expect a tra sto. Nb has anutrastrā. Conze’s note 42 incorrect here.

[13] The syllable is partially obscured and could be rvva. Later Nepalese mss. routinely double va and ya when preceded by r, e.g. āryyā, sarvva.

[14] expect tta

[15] Ms. is damaged, but the visible portions conform to expected reading.

[16] This and next sa are preceded by a mark that must be avagraha.

[17] There appear to be 5 syllables erased by damage. We expect 6 however: t pra jñā pā ra mi

[18] partial obscured.

[19] pārasaṃgate omitted

[20] expect śikṣitavyaṃ. There is space for another syllable though one is not suggested by the expected text.

[21] Based on expected text, syllables erased by damage.

[22] Based on expected text, syllables erased by damage.

[23] Based on expected text, syllables erased by damage.

Reconstructed Text.
