Taishō 256 (Cb)

The Chinese Tripiṭaka contains a number of Heart Sutra texts (See Chinese). Amongst them is a short text version which includes a transliterated Sanskrit text (T256 8.851.a1-852.a23). Originally attributed to Xuanzang (602-664), his disciple Kuījī caused this text to be inscribed on a stone wall at some unknown date. It was then edited by Amoghavajra (705–774) but must have reached its final form after his death, since the preface mentions his posthumous name. See my forthcoming blog for a detailed discussion on the attribution (25 Dec 2015). A ms. copy found at Dunhuang also exists: British Library ms. Or.8210/S.5648 .

This version was published along with a Romanised Sanskrit text and below I have extracted the Sanskrit and Chinese texts according to Mastumoto (1932), who has edited the Sanskrit to make it comply with the edition of Ja by Max Müller. The introduction of the text was translated by Hurvitz (1977) and accompanied by another Roman transcription and translation. Tanahashi reports that the text has also been studied by Fukui (2000), but Fukui has only published in Japanese to date.

T256 and S.5648 are not identical and need to be studied and compared. Neither correspond exactly to T250 or T251 and a critical study of the Chinese Canonical versions of the Heart Sutra is also required. A desiderata would be to reconstruct the Middle Chinese pronunciation of Amoghavajra’s transliteration.
